EXPERIENCE Anvil Bay
Welcome to Anvil Bay, an exclusive beach safari camp located in Mozambique’s Maputo Special Reserve. This secluded eco-destination sits on a pristine stretch of coastline, offering guests a rare chance to connect with nature while enjoying modern comforts. Unlike other beach resorts, Anvil Bay blends barefoot luxury with raw wilderness for an unforgettable coastal retreat.
Nestled within the coastal forest, our camp features just 10 private Casinhas. Built on stilted wooden decks, each Casinha provides direct beach access and panoramic views. Here, nature lovers can relax, unwind, or set off on ocean adventures, forest walks, or savannah safaris.
At Anvil Bay, our Casinhas—meaning “little homes”—combine simplicity with style. Constructed from local materials, they blend seamlessly into the forest canopy. Each unit includes:
A private beachfront deck
Indoor and outdoor showers
A mini-bar and beverage station
Natural cooling through open canvas sides
Our minimalist lighting design helps protect nesting sea turtles while enhancing your stargazing experience.
Southern Mozambique features a tropical savannah climate. Winter (June–August) offers mild, dry conditions—ideal for beach walks and safaris. Summer (December–March) brings warmer weather and occasional afternoon storms. January is the hottest month, perfect for ocean swimming.
Four species of sea turtles—including Loggerhead and Leatherback—can be spotted here. From October to March, watch these ancient creatures nest along our protected shores.
Between July and November, witness the breathtaking migration of Humpback whales. Bottlenose dolphins are also frequent visitors, and you may even have the chance to swim with them in the wild.
Anvil Bay is more than a destination—it’s a model for responsible travel. In partnership with the Chemucane community, our camp supports local employment and education. Funded by the World Bank and philanthropic organizations, Anvil Bay contributes directly to conservation and community development.
By choosing to stay with us, you help protect this incredible environment. All profits support local communities and conservation in the Maputo Special Reserve.
Accomodation
At Anvil Bay, we believe in offering guests a truly immersive beach experience while preserving the untouched beauty of our pristine coastline. That’s why we’ve kept development to a minimum. Rather than large structures, we use eco-friendly canvas tents that provide shade along the beach. In the nearby forest, thatched shelters offer cozy protection during occasional storms.
The heart of Anvil Bay features a beachfront bar, lounge, and restaurant—perfectly positioned in the center of the bay. On either side of this hub, you’ll find our accommodations, giving you the option to stay near the buzz or retreat to complete seclusion at the northern or southern ends.
Our unique accommodations, called Casinhas (meaning “little homes” in Mozambique), are thoughtfully placed in the coastal forest canopy. Just steps from the white sand, each casinha harmonizes with nature. Built with a small footprint and using sustainable, locally sourced materials, they offer a blend of simplicity and elegance.
Inside, you’ll enjoy fine linen, functional furnishings, and touches of local craftsmanship. Every casinha includes a luxury en-suite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers, along with a private dining deck for those special moments.
Casinhas feature thatched roofs and canvas sides that roll up to welcome ocean breezes. This design lets you feel connected to the surroundings, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere. As night falls, minimal outdoor lighting allows you to fully appreciate the brilliance of the African night sky. It also helps protect local wildlife—especially nesting sea turtles.
There are nine timber-and-thatch casinhas nestled in the coastal dune forest. Elevated on wooden decks, they radiate a clean, natural aesthetic. With a choice of bed configurations, each unit includes a well-stocked mini-bar and a convenient tea-and-coffee station, creating a home-away-from-home vibe for every traveler.
Entertainment and Sports
Anvil Bay offers over 5 kilometers of pristine coastline for you to explore. Walk 3 km north or 2 km south along the shore and soak in breathtaking views. As you hike, climb some of the highest coastal dunes in the world to catch stunning ocean vistas and unforgettable sunsets.
Step off the sand and into the lush dune forest. Our guided nature walks lead through coastal forest and open savannah. Whether you’re a birding enthusiast or simply want a peaceful stroll to see hippos in a nearby lake, there’s a trail for you.
Experience the coastline on two wheels with our California Beach Cruiser bikes. Best enjoyed at low tide, these bikes make it easy to cruise along the beach and take in the scenery at your own pace.
Paddle along the tranquil shoreline using our single or double sea kayaks. We provide lifejackets for safety, and our double kayaks can be outfitted for light angling. These excursions are ideal when conditions are calm.
Try your balance on our stand-up paddle boards, perfect for both standing and kneeling. Glide across calm waters while taking in the natural beauty of the bay. All activities are weather dependent.
Dive into a colorful underwater world with our guided snorkeling trips. After a quick boat ride, discover coral reefs teeming with marine life. We supply all equipment and teach you the basics. Participants must be able to swim. Trips depend on sea conditions.
Catch the waves with our easy-to-use body boards. It’s a fun, active beach activity for kids and adults alike. Our staff will help you find the safest spots along the shoreline for riding the surf.
Join us for an exciting 2-hour ocean safari. Cruise along the coast searching for dolphins, turtles, and even the occasional whale shark or manta ray. Lifejackets are provided. From July to November, witness Humpback whales breaching and playing during their migration. You can often spot them from shore, but a boat tour offers a closer view.
Grab a rod and try your luck at shore fishing. We offer gear, basic instruction, and local knowledge for beginners. Expect to catch species like pompano, trevally, shad, and bonefish. We practice catch and release to support marine conservation.
Book a half-day deep sea fishing trip aboard our jet-powered boat. The Indian Ocean offers world-class sport fishing, with all activities following strict conservation standards. Charters are weather-dependent.
At low tide, explore the tidal pools along the coast. Marine guides and reef walker booties are available to make this activity safe and fun. Discover crabs, starfish, and other small sea creatures—perfect for families.
Our beach lounge offers a “treasure chest” of toys and games. Build sandcastles, toss a Frisbee, or play a round of volleyball or touch rugby. It’s all about relaxing and having fun on the sand.
From October to March, witness the nesting of Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles. Hatchlings emerge between December and March. Join a guided walk to observe this magical event, and learn about Anvil Bay’s efforts in the turtle conservation program.
